‘First drive’

Think sporting art and a pack of grouse flying towards the butts must rank as the subject that has been painted by every sporting artist who ever picked up a brush. I have one in the folio after 40 years painting so it was time to have a another go. Mornings on the moors here in Wales this summer have seen the atmosphere full of moisture creating low cloud and a flat light that was the inspiration for the piece. I wanted the challenge of a large piece so stretched a sheet of heavy water colour paper 38 ins x 50 ins and braced myself in front of the easel.
